Scientific Consultant

Dr Thuy Do is a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Leeds School of Dentistry. Her passion for oral health began with a foundational degree in Biochemistry from the University of Strasbourg, France. Dr Do furthered her expertise with a BSc in Food Science and Nutrition, and an MSc in Analytical Chemistry.

Driven by a desire to delve deeper into the microbial world, she obtained a PhD in Microbiology from De Montfort University, Leicester. Following her research pursuits, Dr Do spent eight years honing her skills as a post-doctoral researcher at King’s College London’s Guy’s Hospital Dental Institute.

In 2012, Dr Do joined the University of Leeds, School of Dentistry, where she imparts her knowledge to Dental Surgery students and supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate researchers. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom, as she actively participates in national and international research collaborations across various academic and industrial projects.

Dr Do's research focuses on two key areas:

Unveiling the diversity of the oral microbiome and its connections to various infectious diseases.

Understanding the complex biological interactions within oral microbial communities.

Dr Do tackles complex questions about oral health by employing a powerful toolbox of techniques. This includes culturing methods to isolate microbes, next-generation DNA sequencing to identify entire microbial communities, and sophisticated bioinformatic analysis to make sense of the vast amount of data, ultimately revealing the intricate workings of oral biofilms, and their association with oral diseases and overall health conditions.
